About human

The human being is one of the oldest motifs in art. Not least also the most important one as it concerns ourselves. Especially in times when social relations have to be redefined and self-reflection and self-determination are more relevant than ever. Portraits and paintings of men and women provide a medium through which we can project ideas and concepts. In the artworks of Maria Lassnig, Martin Kippenberger, Daniel Richter and Cindy Sherman the human being becomes a means of experimentation. The decades, following the Second World War were still heavily characterized by the violent crimes that had occurred. Aspects of one’s livelihood and exploring one’s own position in the world, as well as issues of gender awareness and social interaction were being renegotiated. In this way art also challenges us as human beings time and again.
