Gestures and Signals

Our bodies speak, even when we are silent. Artists often use gestures to express the frame of mind of the person portrayed or to illustrate a tangle of relationships. It takes a great deal of practice and precise observation to depict anatomically correct hands. And yet hands can tell us so much: they can, for example, be piously folded in prayer, beckon to another person, or support a head bowed in grief.
