Biography

According to the Bible, Jesus was crucified together with two criminals (cf. Mt 27:38−44; Mk 15:27−32; John 19:18). The thief who, according to the Gospel of Luke, showed repentance on the cross, for which Jesus promised him entry into paradise (cf. Lk 23:32−43), is called Dismas, the penitent thief, in postbiblical legendary tradition and is usually shown at the right hand of Christ in paintings.
