About the Work

The church father Hieronymus lived as a hermit and translated the Bible into colloquial Latin. With Rembrandt this becomes an Arcadian scene, celebrating the joy of spiritual work in the seclusion of a summerly landscape. The lion, who faithfully accompanied the saint since he had pulled a thorn out of its paw, watches over the scholar and ensures his peace. The seemingly incomplete nature of the prints, especially in the foreground, creates the impression of bright and warm sunlight.
