About the Work

This watercolour excels in its realistic portrayal of the crab, having captured and depicted its shell in great detail down to the last pockmark. Like many of his contemporaries, Jan van Huysum, who was primarily famous for his still lifes with flowers and fruits, was fascinated by the precise observation of nature and the accurate, lifelike representation of his subjects.
