Biography

1892-1894 Academy of Fine Arts, Rotterdam. 1897-1898 lives in Paris. 1898 returns to Rotterdam. Meets Félix Fénéon. 1899 moves to Paris permanently. Contact and friendships with Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and others. 1904 first one-man show in the Galerie Vollard, Paris. 1905 exhibits in the Salon d'Automne. 1906-1907 atelier in the Bateau Lavoir. 1907 meets Daniel Kahnweiler. 1908 participates in a show of 'Die Brücke'. 1910-1911 travels in Italy, Spain, and Morocco. 1913 journeys to Egypt, and again in 1928. 1914 solo show at Paul Cassirer's, Berlin. 1921 visits Venice. 1935 temporary stay in the United States. 1957 moves to Monaco.
