The Fascination of Dance

From celebrations to opera performances to varieté or concerts: dance lives from the expression of the emotions through the variation of rhythmic and flowing movements of the body. It is therefore all the more difficult to portray dancers on canvas or to represent them in sculpture. Painters such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Edgar Degas were inspired by varieté and opera, while Helmut Middendorf was fascinated by the electrifying atmosphere of a concert.
