About the Work

Until 1961, Chillida’s sculptural oeuvre was dominated by rods welded together, sometimes in combination with small steel plates. It was in this phase that the artist executed "Yunque de sueños VII" (Anvil of Dreams VII). Four-sided rods, some curved, come together here to form a linear figure. In this early work, the artist combined an open structure with a solid block of wood that serves as a base and already anticipates his later interest in various aspects of volume.
