About the Work

With Wir, wir, wir, Du, Du, ich — a reduced, very simple object in the tradition of American Minimal Art — Asta Gröting investigates the relationship between interior and exterior, form and content, organic materials and abstraction. This is both a nest and an abstract sculpture. The artist sets up the transparent forms around the centre of the object as if they were the fragile wall of a tower or well; she is apparently endeavouring to protect what is inside. Evincing an affinity with Arte Povera, Gröting imbues the simple, non-artistic materials with metaphorical meanings: inside, the wood shavings which are also used for stuffing animal specimens or corpses; for the circular shell, transparent PVC cubes resembling skin which divides the interior from the exterior but cannot provide complete protection.
