About the Work

Tübke achieved the dismal, eerie effect of this work by reversing light and dark: On a sheet of paper tinted reddish-brown and washed in black, he sketched the figures of a mysterious Rococo gathering in white. As a result, their limbs look partially skeletonized. They have come together around a dead magician in whom the artist will presumably have imagined himself.
