About the Work
Hendriks’s signature is found on the back of this sparse fruit still life. It was nevertheless considered a work by Jan van Huysum until into the nineteenth century – and presumably also once sold as such. With his masterful handling of the watercolour technique, the artist achieved a strikingly realistic description of the motifs, which he depicted to scale. This is particularly evident in the grapes that, in their overly ripe state, have attracted the interest of two insects.
