About the Work

Ever since Malevich’s Black Square and Russian Suprematism, the static, self-contained square has been the epitome of modern art – right up to our present era. With Vasarely, modernism enters into motion, begins to vibrate: here more than twenty variously coloured, interlocking squares fluctuate from blue through green to yellow. An abstract composition consisting of flat forms which we –perhaps without intending to – think further, directly into the space before and behind the picture. Our perceptual process, eye and picture never come to a standstill but remain constantly in motion.
