About the Work

The swelling and ebbing courses of the lines and the controlled parallel and cross-hatching are reminiscent of the engraving technique. And a corresponding print by Agostino Carracci does in fact exist. It bears the title Omnia vincit Amor (“love conquers all”), which goes back to the Roman poet Virgil. The juxtaposition of Cupid and Pan, the god of shepherds, has its origins in an erudite play on words: The Latin word for “all”, “omnia” is replaced by the Greek equivalent, “pan”.
