About the Work

It is the practical implementation of a theoretical concept which culminates in Sol LeWitt's sculptures. 'Maquette for Seven Cubes Half Off' is the model of the work he developed in 1991 for the forecourt of the Dresdner Bank in Frankfurt. The starting point is the cube which LeWitt uses as an open structure. The total of seven cubes, their size and the form of their arrangement was determined by the artist beforehand in a plan. The actual execution is the mechanical realisation of this idea and does not require any further creative participation. Independent of his design, the material object enters into a dialogue both with the location in which it is presented and with the viewer.
