About the Work

This painstakingly executed drawing by a hitherto unknown Venetian master from about 1500 probably served as a preliminary study for a large-scale painting. The headgear, a beretto, reveals that it is not the depiction of a saint we see here, but the portrait of a donor or other accompanying figure directing his gaze upward in devotion. The emphatic handling of light and dark colour values lend the portrait an almost sculptural effect.
