Like all of the families of Frankfurt’s patriciate, the Holzhausens and the clans related to them were exceedingly proud of their lineage and the links connecting them. Ancestral charts such as this one of the Maria Justina and Johann Maximilian zum Jungen are pictorial expressions of this sense of self-esteem. A mighty tree in an ideal park landscape bears the blazon of the siblings’ ancestors, among them their great-grandparents Justinian and Anna von Holzhausen, who had been portrayed by Conrad Faber von Creuznach in a famous double likeness of 1535.
