About the Work

A stone quarry explodes, blasting the boulders into a cloud of stone particles which, an instant later, will be distributed far across the site. The setting for the final seconds in the life of the ephemeral landscape is a quarry in the north of the country. Naoya Hatakeyama is a highly respected photographer in his native Japan. His 'Blast' series depicts the Earth as it undergoes change in moments of explosive discharge. His snapshots of exploding limestone reflect a longing for destruction deeply embedded in the human consciousness.
