Biography

Hitz initially studied at an art school in Munich. From 1878 to 1882 she served as court painter to Queen Elizabeth of Romania in Bucharest. In the 1880s she lived in Paris. There she worked with renowned painters such as Luc-Olivier Merson and Eugène Carrière. She participated in the Paris Salon starting in 1885 and later exhibited her works internationally. In 1893 she settled in Berlin, now a recognized painter. She joined the Berlin Secession and other organizations and directed her own painting school. Hitz contributed in many ways to improving the training conditions for female artists.
