You eat with your eyes first

Magnificently arranged fruit, crates full of tomatoes or rotting chocolate: the examination of food has a long tradition in the history of art. From the 17th century onwards, still lifes showed opulent compositions of food – always as a symbol of transience. In the modern age, many concentrate on the social aspect of eating together. Time and again, food is the subject of paintings, and in the present day, food itself even becomes an object of art.
