Europe is a many things: a mythological figure, a subcontinent, an economic sphere, an alliance of states, an independent legal entity, and forms the European Union. Today, Europe acts as an important trading partner and political actor. For many refugees from crisis or war zones, Europe is a promise: they seek a better life in peace and freedom. At the beginning of the 20th century, however, its ports were the starting point for an escape to the New World: America. Artists have dealt intensively with Europe in their works, either illustratively or documentarily, from mythological origins to the embodiment of a political utopia.
