About the Work

In 1980, the West German art dealer Dieter Brusberg encouraged Tübke to carry out a drawing triptych on the role of woman. The third sheet, Woman as Mother, depicts a mother and daughter with eerily frozen facial features. Stiff as dolls, they have been stuck into gowns richly decorated with lace. A third figure floats away into the background, leaving us to puzzle over its possible meaning.
