About the Work

As a businesswoman in Amsterdam from 1691 on, Merian lived in part from the sale of such striking flower drawings as this one. The motif of the white cyclamen was evidently in demand: there are two further versions of the drawing in other collections. The execution is of a high quality, but there is nevertheless still some doubt as to whether it is entirely from Merian’s own hand or was carried out with the assistance of her daughters, who were accordingly trained. The inscription was probably added by a hand other than the artist’s.

Maria Sibylla Merian (1647–1717) zählt sowohl zu den bedeutendsten Naturforscherinnen als auch zu den namhaftesten Künstlerinnen ihrer Zeit. Maria Sibylla Merian fasziniert nicht nur mit ihren meisterhaft ausgeführten Blumenzeichnungen, sondern gleichermaßen durch ihre Biografie, die von ihrem Behauptungswillen als Frau in einer patriarchisch geprägten Gesellschaft zeugt. 2017 jährte sich der Todestag der gebürtigen Frankfurterin zum 300. Mal. Aus diesem Anlass präsentiert das Städel Museum vom 11. Oktober 2017 bis zum 14. Januar 2018 die Sonderausstellung „Maria Sibylla Merian und die Tradition des Blumenbildes“.
