Bruegel’s view of the waterfall of Tivoli is an early depiction of a motif that was still fascinating many artists in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Creating the impression of wild, unbridled nature, the charged fusion of the swirling rapids with the distinctive rock formations is especially striking. These natural elements contrast with the clear structures of the humanmade architecture upstream from the waterfall.
