About the Work

With this double portrait of an older and a younger subject, Tübke achieved an especially sensitive character study from within the East German post-reunification milieu. The older man averts his gaze, withdrawing into himself and his memories. Shy, sceptical, mistrustful, and full of reservations, the younger one hunches his shoulders as he gives us a sidelong look.
