About the Work

A comparison with the original design reveals that the publisher Hieronymus Cock made changes to Bruegel’s composition: apart from the sun shining on the horizon, the other major addition is the halo around the head of the central figure. It is this feature that identifies him as Christ and clarifies the work’s subject matter.
