About the Work

The whole village is buzzing with exuberant activity. The people are indulging in lively banter, food, drink, and games. The patron of the church consecration festival is Saint George, whose depiction decorates the banner at the right. His fight with the dragon plays out behind the wild sword dance at the centre of the depiction. Scenes like this one, devoted to what was perceived as the carefree and dissolute life of the peasant folk, were extremely popular among collectors.
