About the Work
This large, painting-like drawing is one of the social satires for which Cornelis Troost was known and liked. Here the topic is excessive consumption of alcohol. A group of drunken gentlemen are setting out from a remotely situated estate by the name of “Suijpe Steijn”, which can be translated as “booze house”. They have evidently caroused there all night, also in the company of ladies. Now they essay, with some difficulty, to board a boat for the trip home.
