About the Work

Is this a fallen shooting star? The red star lies in flames and smoke in an unrecognisable environment. The positive associations with the celestial body turn negative: the celestial body’s dark side lights up. With a background in conceptual art, Jiří Dokoupil developed a gestural, figurative pictorial language, which frequently incorporates political allusions. The books he used for this work are charged with new meaning. Ultimately, however, his works avoid making an unequivocal statement.
