About the Work
This print combines a depiction of St Martin with a harbour scene in a surprising way. The saint is identified by his mantle, which is so long that it reaches all the way to a beggar sitting on the shore. Martin himself is standing on a barge of the kind once used in the Southern Netherlands to transport travellers and their animals. The figures surrounding him—invalids and beggars—are caricatured after the manner of Hieronymus Bosch.
