About the Work

In this drawing, the latest in the Beaucamp Collection, the artist juxtaposed a view of a southern landscape with a depiction of a hanged man. It was the artist’s own dressing gown, hung on the line to dry, that inspired the latter image. The landscape softens the macabre vision, while at the same time its idyllic aura is subverted by the grinning skeleton.
