About the Work

The back of the sheet exhibits the same motif as the front, but in mirror image, and its lines consisting of a soft, pressed-on substance. Before drawing the picture on the front, Baselitz had laid the sheet of paper on a zinc plate coated with an “etching ground”, a layer of very soft wax. As he drew, he pressed the drawing utensil into the soft ground through the paper. The etching ground stuck to the back of the sheet along the drawn lines. The artist then used the zinc plate to make a print.
