Like the series of twelve landscapes, this print depicts a striking mountain realm much in the way artists had portrayed it again and again since antiquity. The Frankfurt example has been cropped substantially on the upper edge, compromising the splendid vastness of the scene. Numerous adaptations dating from the late sixteenth century testify to the motif’s success.
