About the Work

This landscape was probably already on the sheet when the artist reused it for the study of the standing Nicolas Vleughels on the other side. The strip of land on a body of water with buildings amongst the trees appears to have been sketched casually. With a few strokes of red chalk and the use of the stumping technique, Watteau nevertheless achieved an intense atmospheric effect.
