This sheet by Nicolas Lancret imitates the three-chalk technique typically employed by Watteau. The artist arranged the studies of various details on the surface in such a way that they bear a relation to one another and perhaps even playfully form a portrait. The sheet entered the Städel Museum collection as a Watteau. Owing to a correspondence with a painting, however, it has likewise meanwhile been attributed to Lancret.
