The key importance of proverbs in the sixteenth century is evident in both the great number of pictorial depictions and collections of sayings of the kind assembled by Erasmus of Rotterdam and many others. The round images depicting proverbs held at Städel Museum bear reference to motifs in works by Bruegel, but do not quote them exactly.
