About the Acquisition

Benedikt Taschen, who lives in Cologne, Berlin and Los Angeles, is an important publisher and collector of art. In 1980, at the young age of nineteen, he opened a shop for comic-book literature in his home town of Cologne, which soon afterwards led to the founding of the internationally famous Taschen Verlag. His innovative idea of publishing illustrated books on art in high print runs enabled a broad section of the public to acquire the publications inexpensively. He also collected artists of his own generation in particular, including Albert Oehlen and Martin Kippenberger, and promoted their work. The Städel is indebted to Benedikt Taschen and his outstanding collecting activities and generous commitment for extensive gifts of contemporary art to the museum.

Was sieht eine Neurowissenschaftlerin und Ärztin in den Werken der Städel Sammlung? In diesem Gastkommentar eröffnet Elisabeth Binder (Direktorin am Max-Planck-Institut für Psychiatrie) ihre individuelle Sichtweise auf die Kunstwerke im Städel Museum. Sie schaut sich dabei Hans von Marées "Zwei sitzende Kinder" (1885-1887) an und erläutert, dass psychiatrische Krankheiten zwar vererbt sind, aber dies noch lange nicht alles erklärt. Am Beispiel von Hermann Nitschs Schüttbild "28. Malaktion, Prinzendorf (rot)" (1989) geht Binder auf den Einfluss der Umwelt auf unsere Psyche ein. Anhand von Werner Büttners Gemälde "Bitte um 20 Uhr wecken" (1982) erläutert sie schließlich, was psychiatrische Krankheiten mit Menschen machen können. What does a neuroscientist see in the Städel Collection? In this guest commentary, Elisabeth Binder (Director at the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry) gives us her individual perspective on the artworks in the Städel Museum.
