Piero Buonaccorsi, called Perino del Vaga (born in Florence in 1500/01; died in Rome in 1547), arrived in Rome around 1516 after initial training in Florence. He was engaged in decorative projects of the Raphael workshop. After the sack of Rome, he moved to Genoa in 1528 as a court painter to Andrea Doria. From 1538 he was again in Rome, where among other projects he directed the painting of the Castel Sant'Angelo (1545-47).
