Biography

1918 military service. 1919-1921 studies architecture. 1921 Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Munich. 1923-1924 studies church painting. 1925 study sojourn on Mallorca. 1927 takes part in the annual exhibition in Munich's Glaspalast. 1928 member of the artists' group 'The Jury Free'. 1930 joins with other artists to form '7 Munich Painters'. 1933 member of the 'Munich Secession'. 1934 'Venice Biennale'. 1939-1940 military service. 1942-1945 teaches at the Städel School, Frankfurt am Main. 1945 moves to Munich. 1955-1973 president of the 'Munich Secession'. 1968 moves to Pöcking on Lake Starnberg.
