Biography

Inge Dinand began studying art in the preparatory class of the new Frankfurt School of Arts and Crafts in 1925 and in 1928 / 29 transferred to Max Beckmann’s master studio there. She called attention to herself with her independent painting style and was exhibiting her works in Frankfurt even before completing her studies. After the National Socialist accession to power in 1933, she withdrew from public life and married her fellow student Walter Hergenhahn. A large number of her works were destroyed during World War II. After her separation from her husband, Dinand had difficulty earning a living despite the recognition she enjoyed in Germany.
