Biography

According to extrabiblical tradition, Caspar is the name of one of the "astrologers" (literally magicians) from the East who, according to Matthew's account, were led by a star to the birthplace of Christ in Bethlehem. Together with Melchior and Balthazar, the wise men also known as the "Three Wise Men (or Magi)" paid homage to the Child Jesus and offered him gold, incense and myrrh as gifts (cf. Mt 2:1−12; Ps 72:10; Is 60:3).
