Biography

Girolamo Sellari, called Girolamo da Carpi (born in Ferrara in 1501; died in Ferrara in 1556/57), entered the painting workshop of Benvenuto Tisi, called Garofalo, around 1520, and subsequently studied in Bologna. From 1524/25 he was repeatedly in Florence and Rome. In Ferrara he worked for the Este as painter and architect; from 1549 to 1553 he was in the service of Cardinal Ippolito d'Este in Rome. He created a corpus of drawings modelled after ancient works of art.
