Biography

1894 first time spent in London. 1895 studies at the Technical College, Dresden. 1896 back in London. Attends the Kensington School of Art. 1897 moves to Paris. Attends the école des Beaux-Arts. 1899/1900 visits Italy, mainly Florence and Rome. 1901 participates in his first exhibition in Paris and Vevey. 1906 becomes acquainted with Cuno Amiet and Giovanni Giacometti. 1907 visits Félix Vallotton. 1914 returns to Switzerland. Atelier in Lausanne. 1924 gets to know Jean Dubuffet. Trip to southern France. 1926 first one-man show in Lausanne, subsequently Basel. 1939 trip to Rome. 1948 'Venice Biennale'. 1955 'documenta 1', Kassel.
