About the Work

In the years after Watteau’s death, François Boucher was the most influential painter of the Rococo. As a young man he carried out numerous etchings after drawings by his older colleague, thus acquiring the latter’s technique and style. In the three- chalk technique characteristic of Watteau, Boucher here drew a musician sitting on a wall and tuning his violin. He has appar- ently closed his eyes as he listens to the sounds of his instrument with calm concentration.
