About the Work

In 1965 Lüpertz painted three paintings showing roof tiles. Soberly, precisely and disturbingly isolated, he brings the motif, which provokes with its triviality and banality, onto the unprimed canvas. Only white, coarsely applied contours give stability to the roof tile. Again, the contrast between the space of the object and the spacelessness of the background creates the impression of a sudden, eventful appearance. Lüpertz approaches the object again, at the same time withdraws its context and thus its real reference.
